DESCRIPTION
In 2019 Furr painted this Acadian red fish - a deepwater fish ranging from Iceland to the mid-Atlantic. The bright red subject is rendered in a very painterly manner on a dark charcoal grey anonymous background.
"My fishmonger friend in Shepherds Bush called me one day and said I had to come in and see this fish. I was in the middle of something at the time but he was so insistent that I somewhat reluctantly headed over from Ham. When I saw the creature I instantly knew why he had called me. I loved the way this fish looked. It was very alien looking and the red tones were rich and fantastic. It reminded me of all those Dutch still lives and what appeared on the tables in those great paintings. It also brought to mind something that my favourite Rembrandt might paint."
Furr's fish still lives began in 1992 with ‘Red Mullet and lemon’. The early work features the fish on a salcombe porcelaind dinner plate with half a lemon and a brown background.
